I join the GVAHA program in 2010 as an assistant coach for a 16U Midget Team. Since joining the stars program I have coached at just about every level for the program, Learn-to-Skate, Learn-to-Play, 8U,10U,12U and will now be coaching 13U Bantam A.
I currently have three sons that play for GVAHA Stars, Max is a 13U Bantam A, Cooper is an 8U Mite, and Porter will be in the 6U Cross-Ice program this year. My wife also now enjoys playing hockey in a local COED league.
My coaching staff and I’s main focus around practice structure and player development revolve around skill progression through Station Based practices and Small Area Games. Each station and/or small area game we practice with focuses on the skills players need to be successful (passing, skating, shooting, stick handling, team concepts). We focus on a concept based hockey approach that allows young players develop and grow mentally while they progress on their skills.
As a coach my main coaching philosophy is to teach, promote, and help instill strong life skills and experiences for young athletes through the sport of hockey. Hockey, much like life, is a process of ups and downs that has to be navigated in order to have success. My coaching staff and I promote an exciting, fun, fast paced, challenging learning environment for our players while pushing a strong work ethic, team building, communication, and individual accountability. While our coaches can provide our players a path and the tools needed to be a successful individual and hockey player, it is up to the individual player to put in the work to ensure they are successful. As our players grow and get older in our system, we begin to place more “responsibility “ and “ownership” on our players and hold them accountable to take a stake in their own personal development. Hockey is truly the “greatest game”, not only is it fun to play because of its fast pace ever changing environment, but also as a tool to teach young individuals to be successful in life.
